Welcome to my fallout (mostly New Vegas) page!

WIP

Ok this page is going to have some horrible spelling and grammer errors, sorry :(. And it is writing with the assumtipion that you have basic New vegas Knowlage (I'll try and make it understacabout if you don't but it may still be really confusing) and it CONTAINS SPOILERS. (also go play new vegas if you haven't)

I LOVE FALLOUT NEW VEGAS

The Legion

OK so before I start my analysis, I just to preface the Legion within new vegas is incomplete, ther was a lot more planned for them, then what was seen in the game due to its time restrantes, to try and paint a fuller picture of the faction I've taken alot of info from the Van buran design documents, the New Vegas Game Guied Collectors Edition and behind the scenes domcuatures, intveiws, tumblr blogs from the creators (mainly Joshua Sawyer), these are not canon so take what I say with a grain of salt, and it's all just my own thoughts and opions, although I've tried to back it up with sources ehich I'll try and link (like the good little humanties student whos taking this all way too serously I am) also I am writing this prior to the seconds season of the show coming out (which I'm pretty sure there will be alot of new content for the legion so just be aware of this. I'm also a massive nerd about Lingusitics and also history, I may start getting a bit off topic when thesse subjects come up in this anaylsis, sorry :(

Caesar's Legion fucking sucks. On a moral level it is probally one of the worst in the franchise. But I think it is very very well written and from a non moral stand point they might be one of my favoruites, they are so so intresting. I'm gonna ramble about it now. I havne't seen alot of people wh liek them for the same reason I do ( i see aot of people liking them for the VEYR WRONG REASONS, THIS IS NOT ME I AM VERY MORALLLY AGENST THE LEGION AND I HATE I FEEL THE NEED TO MAKE THIS CLEAR) [anyway]

The Legion is not what it seems to be at first and I think there are only two people in game who actualy truely understand the Legion in it's entiraty, being Caesar (or Edward Sallow) himself and Joshua Graham.

One main point of new vegas was about "trying to encourage players to form their own opinions about factions and individuals" [sawyer, J] there is no cut and dry morally correct faction to side with, even thoses learnig towarsd moral goodness like the NCR have factors about them they do not make them a good choice for the furutre of Vegas, and in the same way there is no morally good factions the same goes the other way with the legion, yes on the surface the legion apears to be an down right evil faction and thres enough reason to contiune though the game with that opinion, but there is also enough there to pertenutally justifiy thier immoral actions, theres enough for a pplayer to pssoible put together an argument (although in my opionion it would be flawed) that the legion could be a viable option for the future of new vegas

Beyond this everyone is either outside of the Legion or is extemelt brainwashed in the Legion. Even really promiant Legion Characters such as Vulpas or Lanius have the Legion religous beliefs.

The Legion is very cult-like. There is a very set Reglion and world view, Caesar is fulled belived to be (and worshiped as such) to be the Son of Mars (who seems to be the main God they worship). The Collectors edition game Guide (although its debeted how canon this is) also reifly talked about 'priestesses of Mars' who's whole role is enforcing the relgion. Caesar's will is Mars's Will, to go agesnt Caesar is to go agesnt God.

but of course non of this 'relgion' is true and the only people who have/had any inflance on the legion who know this are Caesar and Joshua Graham.

When you get to talk to Caesar in game he explains too the Couroir a but more about the legion, the issue with wha he says is that everything is fundermentally lawed

Lingusitics

Lingusitcally so much can be said about the Legion, one of the first thing people will notice is the pronoucation diffrance with caesar, being seesar or kaisar. The diffrent being due to the phoentics of latin, no soft 'c' sounds in latin 'C' is always pronouced as a hard 'k', thus is you are speaking latin Kaisar is the more accurate pronucation, but no one calls it that in English, it's such a prentous thing. This doesn't just happen with Caesar, the same thing is seen with worlds like 'Centurion', ahtough these are both pretty Roman words, it is also seen when Casear says 'et cetra' as 'et ketra' This in itself is a Shibboleth (usually a choice of phrasing or single word that distinguishes one group of people from another) player can instantly tell by a characters proncuation of words what their poltics is.

'Et Ketra' is one fo the more extreme version of this which really highlights how totally pretentious Caesar is, 'et cetra' altough being magorly a letting word, is somthing that has been fully engluthed into the English Lexicon. It's a part of daily Lexis for english speakers, (unlike with other words this happens too like centurian or legate or even to an extent caesar which are very roman words) Et cetra is now part of the Enlish Langauge, to use that word with the 'correct' latine pronucation when its only going to add confusion. This majorly shows how obessed he is, focusing on minutie detail while missing the bigger picture, trying to hard to present himself as more intellegent and educated then everyone else around it, like purpose useing long words, that you knwo no one will understand to confuses people making youself feel more illeltigent and in turn, make them feel stupid.

" The rest of the F:NV world pronounces 'Caesar' the way most people in Pre-War America would have pronounced it."

This in itself could acts as a summery as everything I want to say as about about Caesar

Caesar

I've already taked about caesar a bit but now I want to really put my thoughts together what makes him (in my opion) one of the bet written villains in video game history, "There was such a nuance to his blatant hypocrisy. He's not teaching what he believes in, he's teaching what he thinks will work" "Edward Sallow was an extremely intelligent, well-educated man captured by an alien culture and he did what he needed to not only to survive, but to dominate that culture and eventually become its leader. At the point when the Courier encounters him, Caesar’s morality is completely untethered from the culture he grew up in. He’s lived for years in a society that he rules with absolute power and authority, which he designed as he saw fit." - Joshua Sawyer (director of New Vegas)

Formidable Foe to the NCR AKA a really fucking scary enemy

The Legion a terrifying enemy,

The best was I can present this is by comparing how both factions are introducted to the player. ( to preface I am also a MASSIVE NCR fan, I sleep under an NCR flag every night, this NCR slander comes from a place of love, it's from the heart)

(If the player follows the story) The NCR is first introducted to the player is with them sat outside the town of Primm. Primm is overran by bandits, the residents are being killed off at no fault of there own. The bandit's are only there terrorising the town BECAUSE of the NCR (giving convicted criminals sticks of dynimite withut doing a proper risk assement). but the NCr are not helping, firslt because Primm isn't part of the NCR.

Secondly even if they agreed to join the NCR they would not be bale to help due to them lacking the troop and being under resourced. The NCR's 'mistakes' (I really like the threoy that the having the powder ganger's escape was purposeful ) casued such harm and they are too under equipt and resticted by legistaltion to even attempt to solve it. The first impression of the NCR is that they are incompitent.

It's not till a good hour of gameplay later you see the Legion for the first time. During this time there is a lot of build up about the faction, the NPC give breif description of them, aying tehey are violent and slavers, but no one them have ever actually seen the legion, theres this elemate of mystery around the faction, built up as they are something bad. But one thing you do know is that they are far in the East, they dont have a place in that part fo the wasteland (yet?) but theres smoke on the horrison. Before even arriving in Nipton, they player whe

Fitting into a Post Apoclptic Setting

The Legion whole get-up being based so heavly of anceint roman has mojor portentail to really really stand out and look out of place in the fallout setting.

" but at least the legiondoesn't make me pay taxes"

they do, they do make you pay taxes. Its not as stright forward as hwo the NCR makes people pay taxes but some for of taxatyion does take place within the legion. Where does all the food comes from, it's taxes off the ranchers who live within the legion. The legion takes a cut of producing in exchnage for protection stc stc, pretty sure thats a form of taxation. ALSO TAXES ARENT A BAD THING. (but I do think the NCR over taxation is bad)

The Legion and Acient Rome

So to state the obous the Legion is based of acient Rome, but it's not a carbon copy, ( fair wanring Im an archaology student I a major nerd when it comes ot hisotry).

firstly Crusifiction is a good exsample of this, Caesar cherry picks features from Acient Rome while lacking the fundermental understadn of them, The legion crusifiction is not acurate, one reason why crusifiction was sucha crule exicution method was due to how the body was positions, the tourso facing forward but the legs would be roated 90 degrees it was that twist in the body that made it do much worse (try it if you want, stand up with your back agesnt an wall and have your feet 90 degrees in another direction, it's pretty uncorftable comated to just having your legs stright, now imagain that for 3 days) the arms were aranged in a specific way so they would always be under strain. The romans alot didn't really use crosses, it was often done of stright stakes, the legion using crosses is another exscample of 'acient rome' used as base is more This may be a small thing to pull up on but I think its a good exsample of the wider point I'm trying ot make But the legion doesn't do this, Yes even if you are being nice a comfy up on a corss being up there for 3 day still isnt a nice way to go but it's not quite the brutal method using in the pasts, so why curify people if it's not done right

th

caesar agures that the NCR is like the Roman replublic, when it merges with the legion it will make something new and free from currption like the Roman Empire, but the Roman Empire was corrupt, very cuuport, maybe not too much as first but it got there pretty quick, but Caesar doesn'tt mention, there is not plan in plae to prevent this courrption from happening in the legion (also im not saying the legion is free from cupption as is in the game but Casesar definetly thinks so)

Similar to thee whole Hegalian Dialections, this is just all another way that shows that caesar isn't as knowlageable about Acient Rome as he thinks it is, what what he does know is not addressed with the critical thought that is requite when addressing acient soceities, aspects from Rome are takwn too be used in this new soceity without understanding why they were useing in Roe in the first place. This being another major Flaw of the Legion

Joshua Graham

I LOVE THIS CHARACTER, hes very veyr ell written and im gonna do a bit of anlsys on him

Joshua Graham is a terribale person, who has done horrible things but he is trying to be better, however he hasn't changed as much as he thinks. Joshua graham is really similar to Caesar, when talking to both characters its so obvous they built the legion together

When talking to Joshua certain there are alot of certain topics that he keeps bring up and discussing he mentioned when he returned to New Canaan, his family welcomed him back with open arms, dispite everything he had done. He spent the last 30 years at the top of the legion, creating an envorment which i so unforgiving of even the tiniest mistake. I think it must really dawn on him point how truley lucky he is to have that still, a community/tribe that is so forgivnig and accepting dispite his MANY wrong doings, suddenly being in the sort of envorment. That incomapsiong with knowing that he had spent the last 30 years destorying that very same thing, the legion is made up of 86 tribe (a majoroty of this Joshua likley helped conquor, being the Legate he likly who heavy perosnally done it), The fact he gets to just return to his tribe and it be like he never left, while he had personally taken that from so so many haunts him. Uncooked Joshua (like Caesar) likley had the incoorect idea that everything he was doing with the legion was for some form of greater good

Joshua Graham and Edward Sallow

The two were very close for a long time. The started the Legion together and spent 30+ years building it up together, beyond just workoing together to two were very close friends

Also I did some maths and it would have taken them like a whole week to walk from Hoover Dam, this wasn't a spur of the moment, responce of exteme anger kinda desigion, he ad time to think it over.

I think their relationship was going downhill very slowly and they more and more type apart working on expanding the legion in diffrent areas. by the end of it they could hardly stand each other. Loosing the battle of Hoover Dam was almost like a final last excuse to get him out of the picture.

Even after everything I think Joshua still

Legion Founding

I think about the legion founding so much, its getting to be a problem, I've over anaylysed the shit out it.

Edward Sallow

Not too mch is said about Edward Sallow in game you know he gerw up in

Character HeadCanons

I have thought A LOT about Joshua Graham, Edward Sallow and Bill Calhoun during pre-legion and during the very early days of the legion

The true story of how I fallouted:

So I love fallout new vegas (and all of fallout really but New vegas the most) it is pronaraly my favoruite thing ever. I first played Fallout 4 in 2018 for after picking it up on ps4 for 1 pound from a bootfair, I played it a bit then but I didn't get very far into it as I think I was a bit too young for it (i was 11 at the time). So it sat unplayed for 3 year (like a ticking time bomb)

3 Years later in early 2021 and I was older (but not wiser) and was very bored during lock down as I had exsasuted all entertainment from fnaf, danganronpa and what ever else 14 year old me thought was peak ficton. So I picked up fallout 4 again, 'borrowed' (without asking) my sister's ps4 and kaboom. I was hooked so bad, and I played Fallout 4 so so much, I think I totalled around 200 hours on it over about a 6 momth peroid. I played that game to death, went thought every ending option completed EVERY SINGLE QUEST. I was totally in love with the game. after i began ot exsaught fallout 4 i wanted explore more of the francise so I begged and pleaded my mother to take me tdown to the little game shop in town do I could get fallout 3 (with it being an 18 she would have to buy it for me) and eventually she foilded. And when i got there why had it lcukly on PS3 a and my mother asked me if I wanted New Vegas as well, as they were both only 1.50p. I didnt know much about new vegas but I would never turn down my mother buying me somthing, so I walked out the shop with 2 games

anyway I dusted off my old ps3 and tried to play fallout 3 but wasn't really able to get into it (i did later go back and play it and I enjoy it quite a but now). and then a bunch of not nice stuff happened in my personal life and I got very misribale and dropped out of school. One November night changed everything for me (eventually for the better but it didn't feel like it then) but it was also then I deceided to try new vegas for the first time and I have never been so obessed with somthing. I spent a week stright playing it (litrally did not do anything else bar eat that entire week) and once I completed my first playthough, (I sided NCR) I played it again (a bit less intestivly) I played it very consisdtenttly for about three months and once that three months was I was able to go back o school ( be it diffrent one but school, is school). The game was the most important thing for me durnig the most diffcult time of my life and even when i moved on to other thing (but often back to fallout again) it's always going to be important to me.
